Program Participation
Individual knowledge building components and eLibrary readings can be accessed through the PCeL Program Website and can be completed according to the monthly schedule, on your own time.
Collaborative knowledge building will be conducted through synchronous web-based seminars at scheduled times. The seminar schedule will be emailed to you.
All components are designed with reference to a detailed series of palliative care competencies to scaffold formative feedback for your individual and collaborative knowledge improvement and translation to practice.
The Palliative Care eLearning Program contains 6 web-based modules & 6 online seminars (plus a final optional seminar) in the following sequence:
- Module 1: An introductory seminar presentation where you will discuss basic palliative care principles and meet your colleagues.
- Modules 2 & 3: The Case of Mr. Singh Parts 1 & 2 on the topic of pain.
- Module 4: The Case of Mary’s Misery on psychosocial issues around the topic of pain.
- Module 5a & 5b: This module has 2 associated collaborative knowledge building seminars. Module 5a the Case of Hershel’s Heart involves a patient with end-stage heart disease. Module 5b focusses on Symptoms Other than Pain, and is composed of a didactic video, as well as an online seminar with 2 additional cases on dyspnea and gastrointestinal symptoms for collaborative knowledge building.
- Module 6: The Case of Judy’s Last Days Parts 1 & 2 focuses on a patient in the last days and hours of life. In addition, in this seminar, final program KT components, i.e. the Cumulative KT Exercise and the 12-week post-course PCeL Journal will be reviewed.
- Optional Debriefing Seminar: This seminar will provide an opportunity to debrief, reflect, and synthesize knowledge for translation to practice.
All online seminars will be facilitated by a palliative care expert.
Your active participation is required. Seminars are scheduled once a month and are approximately 3 hours long, typically on a weeknight from 7pm to 10pm. Each PCeL module is composed of individual web-based work and 1 online collaborative knowledge building seminar. Plan to devote approximately 4 additional hours per month reading the recommended references in the PCeL eLibrary, completing the KT Exercises, and reflecting on your self-assessment feedback to create your practice improvement KT Plan in the PCeL website.
Note: Knowledge Forum will not be used for asynchronous case-based discussion in the current version of the PCeL Program. All collaborative case-based discussion will be conducted synchronously in online seminars. A link from CPD will be emailed to you each month.
